Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") are a legal agreement between you and Frugal Gent LLC ("Lantern," "we," "us," or "our") governing your use of the Lantern mobile app (the "App"). By downloading, accessing, or using the App, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the App.

1. The service

Lantern is a Bible app that provides a free Scripture reader and, through an optional paid subscription ("Lantern Plus"), guided reading plans and devotionals, an AI study companion, and a journal with habit/streak tracking. We grant you a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the App for your own personal, non-commercial use, subject to these Terms.

2. Eligibility and accounts

• You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age of digital consent in your country) to use the App, and able to form a binding contract.
• Some features require an account. You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for activity under your account.
• You agree to provide accurate information and to keep it up to date.

3. Subscriptions (Lantern Plus)

• What's included. Lantern Plus unlocks reading plans and devotionals, the AI study companion, and the journal with streaks. The Bible reader is free.
• Pricing and trial. Lantern Plus is offered at $59.99/year (with a 7-day free trial) and $6.99/month, or the equivalent in your local currency. Prices and offers may change; current pricing is shown in the App before you purchase.
• Billing. Subscriptions are sold through the Apple App Store or Google Play and billed to your store account. Payment, taxes, and refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their terms — we do not process or store your payment-card information.
• Auto-renewal. Subscriptions automatically renew at the then-current price unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. If you start a free trial and do not cancel before it ends, you will be charged for the subscription.
• Managing and canceling. You can manage or cancel your subscription, and turn off auto-renewal, in your App Store or Google Play account settings. Deleting the App does not cancel your subscription.
• Refunds. Refund requests are handled by Apple or Google according to their policies.

4. AI Study companion

The AI study companion uses a third-party AI model to generate responses to your questions about Scripture. AI-generated content may be inaccurate, incomplete, or not reflect your tradition, and is provided for study and reflection only. It is not professional, theological, medical, legal, financial, or pastoral advice, and you should not rely on it as such. You are responsible for evaluating the responses. Usage of the AI companion may be subject to daily limits.

5. Your content

• You own your content. You retain all rights to the journal entries and other content you create in the App ("Your Content").
• License to operate. You grant us a limited license to host, store, process, and display Your Content solely to provide the App's features to you (for example, syncing and showing you your own journal). We do not use Your Content for advertising or to train AI models.
• Responsibility. You are responsible for Your Content and confirm you have the right to create and store it.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• Use the App for any unlawful purpose or in violation of these Terms;
• Attempt to access another user's account or data;
• Reverse engineer, decompile, interfere with, or disrupt the App or its security, or attempt to circumvent usage limits or access controls;
• Use the App or the AI companion to generate or store unlawful, abusive, or infringing content;
• Scrape, resell, or commercially exploit the App or its content.

We may suspend or terminate access for violations.

7. Scripture and other content

Bible translations included in the App are public-domain texts (such as the Berean Standard Bible, World English Bible, and King James Version). Reading plans, devotional reflections, and other original materials in the App are owned by us or our licensors and are provided for your personal use; you may not redistribute them except as the App allows.

8. Intellectual property

The App, including its design, software, trademarks, and original content (excluding Your Content and public-domain Scripture), is owned by us or our licensors and is protected by intellectual-property laws. Except for the license granted to you in these Terms, no rights are granted to you.

9. Third-party services

The App relies on third-party services (including Apple, Google, our hosting and AI providers, and our analytics and error-monitoring providers). Your use of those services may be subject to their own terms, and we are not responsible for them. See our Privacy Policy for the providers we use.

10. Disclaimers

THE APP IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE APP WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR SECURE, OR THAT AI-GENERATED CONTENT WILL BE ACCURATE.

11. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, Frugal Gent LLC AND ITS PROVIDERS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS, OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF THE APP. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM RELATING TO THE APP WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM OR US $50. SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW CERTAIN LIMITATIONS, SO SOME OF THE ABOVE MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

12. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Frugal Gent LLC from any claims, damages, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your misuse of the App or violation of these Terms.

13. Termination

You may stop using the App and delete your account at any time (Settings → Delete Account). We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms or if we discontinue the App. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination (including Sections 5, 8, 10, 11, and 12) will survive.

14. Changes to the App and these Terms

We may modify or discontinue features, and we may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Your continued use of the App after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.

15. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of New Jersey, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. You agree that the courts located in The state and federal courts located in New Jersey will have exclusive jurisdiction over any disputes, except where prohibited by applicable law. 16. Apple App Store additional terms

If you downloaded the App from the Apple App Store, you acknowledge that these Terms are between you and us, not Apple; that Apple is not responsible for the App or its content; and that Apple is a third-party beneficiary of these Terms and may enforce them. The App must be used in compliance with the App Store Terms of Service.
